ASTM B861 Titanium Pipe Specification

ASTM B861 is a specification for seamless titanium and titanium-alloy pipe. It is commonly referenced when buyers require titanium piping for corrosion resistance, chemical processing, marine service, power generation and other industrial applications.

When requesting ASTM B861 titanium pipe, purchasers should define the titanium grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, length, surface condition, inspection requirements and required certification.

What Does ASTM B861 Cover?

ASTM B861 covers seamless pipe manufactured from titanium and titanium alloys. The specification establishes requirements related to material composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, workmanship and testing.

ASTM B861 should not automatically be treated as interchangeable with every titanium tube or welded pipe specification. The applicable standard should be selected according to the product form and engineering requirement.

Seamless Titanium Pipe

Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld seam and is selected for applications where the specified product form, pressure requirements or engineering design calls for seamless construction.

Dimensions and Tolerances

Titanium pipe orders should clearly state the required outside diameter, nominal or minimum wall thickness, length and dimensional tolerances. Requirements can vary according to size, grade and project specification.

For quotation purposes, providing a complete dimensional schedule helps avoid ambiguity and allows the manufacturer to evaluate production feasibility, tolerances and available manufacturing routes.

Surface Condition and Workmanship

Finished titanium pipe should have a surface condition appropriate for the specified application. Buyers should identify any additional requirements for surface finish, cleaning, inspection or preparation when requesting a quotation.

Testing and Certification

Depending on the purchase specification and project requirements, inspection and testing documentation may include chemical composition results, mechanical test results, dimensional inspection and other specified examinations.
