Design for the Material and the Process.

Titanium machining rewards stable setups, appropriate tooling and careful control of heat and cutting conditions. For complex parts, the drawing should communicate material grade, critical dimensions, tolerances, surface finish and inspection requirements.

  • Choose the grade before finalizing the machining strategy.
  • Identify deep pockets, thin walls and high-aspect-ratio features early.
  • Define critical tolerances rather than applying unnecessarily tight tolerances everywhere.
  • State surface-finish requirements and post-machining treatments.
  • For production parts, include expected quantity and repeatability requirements in the RFQ.

EST Metal currently presents CNC machining as part of its titanium custom-processing offering and discusses complex geometry and 5-axis machining on its CNC parts page.
