TITANIUM MATERIAL SPECIFICATION GUIDE
ASTM B265 Titanium Sheet & Plate Specification
ASTM B265 is a key material specification used when purchasing titanium and titanium alloy strip, sheet and plate. Correct material selection requires confirmation of grade, dimensions, tolerances, surface condition, testing and certification requirements before production.
What Does ASTM B265 Cover?
ASTM B265 covers titanium and titanium alloy strip, sheet and plate. The applicable grade and product dimensions should be specified on the purchase order together with any additional inspection, certification or surface requirements.
ASTM B265 should be referenced together with the required titanium grade and the current project or drawing requirements. The applicable edition of the standard should be confirmed for the purchase order.
Common ASTM B265 Titanium Grades
| Grade | Material Type | Typical Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 1 | Commercially pure titanium | High ductility and formability |
| Grade 2 | Commercially pure titanium | General corrosion-resistant fabrication and industrial service |
| Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V | Titanium alloy | Higher strength applications |
ASTM B265 Grade 2 Titanium Sheet & Plate
Grade 2 is one of the most commonly specified commercially pure titanium grades. Purchasing requirements should define the required sheet or plate dimensions, thickness, tolerance, surface condition and certification requirements.
For projects where corrosion resistance, fabrication characteristics and commercially pure titanium are required, Grade 2 is frequently considered during material selection.
ASTM B265 Grade 5 Titanium Sheet & Plate
Grade 5 titanium, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is selected where higher mechanical strength is required. The final material selection should be confirmed against the engineering drawing, design requirements and applicable specification.
Dimensions and Tolerances
A titanium sheet or plate request should clearly identify thickness, width, length and quantity. Required dimensional tolerances should also be stated where project requirements are more restrictive than standard purchasing practice.
Information to Include in an RFQ
- ASTM B265
- Titanium grade
- Sheet or plate
- Thickness
- Width and length
- Quantity
- Dimensional tolerance requirements
- Surface condition
- Testing and inspection requirements
- Mill Test Report / MTR requirements
Surface Condition
Surface requirements should be agreed before production when the material will be used for precision fabrication, visible components, forming or applications where surface condition is important.
Testing, MTR and Traceability
Material documentation should be reviewed against the purchase order and applicable specification. When required, the Mill Test Report (MTR) provides material identification and reported test information for the supplied heat or lot.
Additional testing, inspection or certification requirements should be stated during the quotation stage rather than after material has entered production.
ASTM B265 vs ASTM B348
ASTM B265 applies to titanium strip, sheet and plate, while ASTM B348 is associated with titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets. Selecting the correct product-form specification is an important first step when preparing a titanium material request.
