TECHNICAL DATA

Titanium Forgings Built Around the Final Component.

Titanium forgings should be specified around the finished component, not only the starting size. Grade, forging type, dimensions, machining allowance, heat treatment, inspection and certification should be defined before production.

Specification & Grades

ASTM B381 is a common specification for titanium and titanium alloy forgings. Frequently requested materials include commercially pure Grade 2 and alloy Grade 5, with Grade 7 and other grades available where the service environment or drawing requires them.

Forging Types

Supply can include forged rings, forged discs, forged blocks, forged bars and custom forgings produced to drawing. The forging route should be selected according to component geometry, required properties, machining plan and order quantity.

Dimensions & Tolerances

Dimensions are reviewed against the drawing and forging route. Diameter, outside diameter, inside diameter, thickness, width, length and section size should be stated where applicable. Tolerances should distinguish forged dimensions from final machined dimensions.

Machining Allowance

Forgings intended for subsequent machining normally require machining allowance. The required stock allowance should be agreed from the finished drawing, dimensional tolerance, surface condition and inspection requirements before production.

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment requirements depend on titanium grade, applicable specification and required mechanical properties. Where heat treatment is specified, the condition and any supporting test requirements should be stated on the purchase specification.

Surface & Machining

Titanium forgings may be supplied as forged, cleaned, conditioned or with machining performed according to the drawing. Surface requirements and any areas requiring machining should be identified clearly during quotation.

Testing & NDT

Testing should follow the applicable material specification and purchase requirements. When required for critical components, non-destructive testing (NDT), including ultrasonic testing (UT), can be reviewed against the drawing, acceptance criteria and inspection standard.

Inspection & Traceability

Inspection documentation can be matched to the agreed order requirements. Material certificates, heat or batch identification and traceability requirements should be defined before manufacture, especially for aerospace, chemical and other controlled applications.

APPLICATIONS

Where Titanium Forgings Are Used.

Forgings are selected where component geometry, strength, corrosion resistance and material integrity must be controlled together.

Aerospace & Engineering

Forged titanium components are used for structural and precision engineering applications where strength-to-weight performance and controlled material properties are important.

Chemical & Process Equipment

Commercially pure and corrosion-resistant titanium grades can be selected for chemical and process equipment exposed to aggressive service environments.

Marine & Industrial

Titanium forgings can support marine and industrial components requiring corrosion resistance, dependable mechanical performance and long service life.

Oil & Gas

For oil and gas equipment, material grade, dimensions, inspection, NDT and certification requirements should be reviewed against the actual service conditions and customer specification.
