TITANIUM WIRE TECHNICAL GUIDE

Titanium Wire Specifications

EST Metal supplies titanium and titanium alloy wire for welding, fabrication, fastener production, forming and other industrial applications. A wire inquiry should normally identify the titanium grade, applicable specification, diameter, dimensional tolerance, surface condition, supply form, quantity and certification requirements. Welding applications should also identify the required filler-metal classification where applicable.

ASTM B863 Titanium Wire

ASTM B863 is commonly specified for titanium and titanium alloy wire intended for general engineering and manufacturing applications. Grade selection depends on the required combination of corrosion resistance, strength, formability and service environment. The applicable grade, diameter and required condition should be stated clearly in the RFQ so the material can be reviewed against the project requirements.

AWS A5.16 Titanium Welding Wire

Titanium welding wire and filler metal may be specified to AWS A5.16. Welding consumables use ERTi classifications corresponding to particular titanium compositions and welding requirements. Common selections include commercially pure titanium filler metals as well as alloyed grades such as ERTi-5 for Ti-6Al-4V applications. The correct filler classification should be selected according to the base material, welding procedure and applicable fabrication specification.

Common Titanium Wire Grades

Commercially pure Grade 1 and Grade 2 titanium wire are widely used where corrosion resistance and formability are important. Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V wire is selected for applications requiring substantially higher strength. Grade 23, also known as Ti-6Al-4V ELI, is associated with applications requiring the ELI version of the alloy. Other titanium grades can be reviewed according to the required standard, application and quantity.

Diameter, Tolerance and Supply Form

Wire diameter is a critical purchasing parameter and should be specified together with the required tolerance. Depending on the application and product requirement, titanium wire may be supplied in coils, spools or straight lengths. Packaging and unit weight requirements should also be identified when they are important to feeding, welding, forming or subsequent manufacturing operations.

Surface Condition and Cleanliness

Surface quality is particularly important for titanium wire used in welding, forming and precision manufacturing. The required surface condition should therefore be included in the inquiry. Where welding wire is involved, handling and cleanliness requirements should be controlled to reduce contamination before use. Any special surface, cleaning or packaging requirement should be communicated before quotation.

Testing and Certification

Material documentation can be reviewed according to the applicable titanium wire or welding consumable specification. Requirements may include chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional inspection, traceability and material test certification. Additional testing or documentation required by a customer specification should be identified in the RFQ before production.

Titanium Wire Applications

Titanium wire is used in welding and fabrication, chemical and corrosion-resistant equipment, fastener manufacturing, forming, medical and precision components, marine applications and general industrial production. Material grade, diameter, surface condition and supply form should be selected according to the downstream process and service conditions rather than by grade alone.

How to Specify Titanium Wire

For an efficient quotation, provide the titanium grade or ERTi classification, applicable standard such as ASTM B863 or AWS A5.16, wire diameter and tolerance, coil, spool or straight-length requirement, quantity, surface condition, packaging requirement and required certification. For welding applications, include the base material and welding specification when available.

WIRE & WELDING WIRE SUPPLY

Titanium Wire Supply to ASTM B863 and AWS A5.16

EST Metal supplies titanium wire for welding, fabrication, fastener, forming and engineered applications. Material can be specified by grade, diameter, tolerance, surface condition, supply form, packaging and the applicable material or welding standard.

Titanium wire requirements vary by end use. General titanium wire may be supplied for forming, fabrication and component manufacturing, while titanium welding wire is selected according to welding process, filler metal classification, base material and applicable AWS requirements.

ASTM B863 Titanium Wire

ASTM B863 is a commonly referenced specification for titanium and titanium alloy wire. When applicable, the RFQ should identify the required titanium grade, nominal wire diameter, tolerance, supply form, surface condition and quantity.

Grade 1 and Grade 2 commercially pure titanium wire can be considered for applications requiring corrosion resistance, ductility or fabrication performance, while Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V wire is selected where higher strength or alloy properties are required.

AWS A5.16 Titanium Welding Wire

Titanium welding wire is commonly specified according to AWS A5.16. The required filler metal classification should be stated clearly on the enquiry so that wire chemistry and welding application requirements can be reviewed before quotation.

Common classifications include ERTi-1, ERTi-2 and ERTi-5, depending on the base material and welding requirement. The appropriate welding wire grade should be confirmed against the welding procedure, engineering specification or project requirement.

ERTi-1, ERTi-2 and ERTi-5 Welding Wire

ERTi-1 and ERTi-2 are commercially pure titanium welding wire classifications used with corresponding commercially pure titanium materials. ERTi-5 is associated with Ti-6Al-4V applications where an alloy welding filler is required.

When requesting titanium welding wire, include the ERTi classification, required diameter, supply form, packaging quantity and any project documentation requirements.

Diameter, Tolerance and Supply Form

Wire diameter and tolerance should be defined according to the application. Titanium wire can be requested in straight wire, coil or spool form where suitable for the required process and handling method.

For welding applications, wire diameter and packaging should be matched to the welding process and equipment requirements. For forming, fastener or component production, straightness, surface condition and dimensional consistency may also be important purchasing considerations.

Surface Condition and Cleanliness

Surface condition is important for titanium wire used in welding, forming and precision manufacturing. Welding wire should be supplied with surface quality appropriate to the welding process and should be protected against contamination during handling and packaging.

If a specific bright wire condition, cleaning requirement or special surface finish is required, this should be identified in the RFQ before production.

Mill Test Report, MTR and Certification

Where required by the purchase order, documentation may include a mill test report (MTR), material certificate, chemical composition results, mechanical property data or other agreed inspection records.

Certification and traceability requirements should be stated at the RFQ stage so they can be reviewed together with the applicable ASTM B863 or AWS A5.16 requirement before quotation.

Lead Time and Custom Titanium Wire Supply

Lead time depends on titanium grade, wire diameter, quantity, surface condition, supply form, packaging and documentation requirements. Standard wire and project-specific welding wire orders may therefore have different production schedules.

For an accurate quotation and lead time, provide the complete wire specification together with grade, diameter, quantity, packaging and delivery requirements.

What to Include in Your Titanium Wire RFQ

A complete titanium wire enquiry should normally include the required grade or ERTi classification, applicable standard such as ASTM B863 or AWS A5.16, nominal diameter, tolerance, supply form, surface condition, quantity, packaging and certification requirements.

For welding wire, also include the base material, welding process or applicable project specification when available.
