ASTM B863 Titanium Wire Specification

ASTM B863 is a commonly referenced specification for titanium and titanium-alloy wire. For buyers, engineers and fabricators, the standard provides an important starting point when defining titanium wire material requirements for industrial and manufacturing applications.

A complete purchase specification should identify not only ASTM B863, but also the required titanium grade, wire diameter, dimensional requirements, surface condition, supply form, quantity, certification requirements and any application-specific controls.

What Does ASTM B863 Cover?

ASTM B863 covers titanium and titanium-alloy wire supplied for applications requiring defined chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional requirements. The exact requirements depend on the selected titanium grade and the applicable purchase specification.

ASTM B863 should therefore be treated as part of the complete material definition rather than as a substitute for grade, size, tolerance, surface and certification requirements.

Material Grade

The required titanium grade should be stated clearly on the RFQ or purchase order. Common commercially pure and alloy grades include Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 5, depending on the required corrosion resistance, strength and fabrication characteristics.

Wire Diameter and Tolerance

Wire diameter is a critical purchasing parameter. The required nominal diameter and applicable tolerance should be confirmed before production. Where tighter dimensional control is required, the tolerance should be stated explicitly on the drawing or purchase specification.

Surface Condition

Surface condition can affect downstream forming, welding, machining and other fabrication processes. Any special surface, cleanliness or finish requirement should therefore be identified before quotation.

GRADES

Common Titanium Grades Used for Wire

Grade 1 Titanium Wire

Grade 1 is commercially pure titanium with high ductility and corrosion resistance. It may be selected where formability and corrosion performance are more important than high strength.

Grade 2 Titanium Wire

Grade 2 is one of the most widely specified commercially pure titanium grades and offers a useful balance of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance for general industrial applications.

Grade 5 Titanium Wire

Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V, is a higher-strength titanium alloy used where greater mechanical performance is required. Final grade selection should always be confirmed against the engineering specification and service conditions.

How to Specify ASTM B863 Titanium Wire

A useful titanium wire RFQ should contain enough information for the manufacturer to review the material and production requirements before quotation.

1. ASTM Standard and Grade

State ASTM B863 together with the required titanium grade. Avoid specifying only “titanium wire,” because different grades have significantly different chemical and mechanical requirements.

2. Diameter and Tolerance

Provide the nominal wire diameter and required tolerance. Include a drawing where the dimensional requirements cannot be described adequately in the purchase order.

3. Supply Form

Specify whether the wire is required as coil, spool or straight lengths. Straightness and length requirements should be stated where applicable.

4. Surface and Cleanliness

Identify any special requirements for surface finish, cleanliness, contamination control or downstream processing.

5. Testing and Certification

State the required inspection and documentation package. Where required, request a Mill Test Report (MTR) showing applicable chemical composition, mechanical properties and material traceability.

ASTM B863 vs AWS A5.16

ASTM B863 and AWS A5.16 may appear in titanium wire purchasing discussions, but they serve different specification purposes. ASTM B863 is used for titanium and titanium-alloy wire material requirements, while AWS A5.16 addresses titanium welding electrodes and rods using ERTi filler-metal classifications.

Welding applications should therefore be reviewed against the applicable welding procedure, base material and filler-metal classification rather than assuming that ASTM B863 alone defines the welding consumable.

QUALITY DOCUMENTATION

Mill Test Report, Certification and Traceability

Material documentation should be agreed before production. Depending on the order and customer specification, documentation may include material identification, heat or lot traceability, chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional inspection results.

If specific inspection, testing or third-party documentation is required, it should be identified in the RFQ so that the requirement can be reviewed before quotation.
